The Rules of Society - Follow ‘em; Break ‘em
Generally, healthcards cover cost of diagnosing and treating most ailments that the cardholder experiences… with the exception of a few diseases. The exceptions are defined because the people who defined the business policies of healthplans think that it would not be beneficial on the long term to cover those exceptional diseases.
The experts define the rules governing exceptions. We agree to the terms and conditions. Generally, cardholders are satisfied with the services they get from their healthcard providers.
Insurance companies provide coverage for natural and accidental death. I guess most of the insurance policies also provide coverage for total or permanent disability of the policy holder. However, the benefits are not the same. Accidental death provides more substantial financial packages to the beneficiaries as compared to natural death. The general reason for this is that the beneficiaries are not prepared for the loss for cases of accidental death, that although greater financial gain may not fully replace the loss of their beloved, a more substantial financial package will help them fast-track their emotional recovery.
The experts define the rules governing the different financial packages. Insurance policy holders agree to the terms and conditions. Generally, policy holders and beneficiaries are satisfied with what is being given to them by the insurance companies.
A lot of companies have different administrative policies that they implement across the board. Take for example the dress-code. Most, companies, especially those who provide professional services, require their employees to dress in a manner which is befitting of the nature of their business. They do not allow their employees to wear in-appropriate attire and there are penalties implemented for those who violate the rules. Coming to work on time is also a general rule and appropriate penalties are implemented for violators.
The HR define policies. The employees agree. A lot of people are still employed, so probably most of them, in general, agree to the terms and conditions defined by the HR department of their company.
American football. It’s a sport that women in general will not play. If ever there are women who are up to the challenge, they will not play a competitive game with all those men lest they end up getting battered physically and probably emotionally. It is naturally a men’s game. There may be exceptional few who would want to be in the same league as those hunks but the society in general accepts that football is a man’s world and that women should be better off staying on the sidelines cheering the men rather than playing with them.
Childbirth is something that only the female specie can do. The males can never contest that. Even the gays who had sex change can never contest that. The male specie are not biologically designed to conceive a child. I think all humans will accept that fact. Some scientists may try to figure out how to make men conceive but it’s probably not worth their while unless the human race will become extinct due to lack of enough female specie to bear children.
Same sex relationship for so long a time have become a subject of debate, but eventually, society accepted the fact that sexual preferences is just as personal as choosing to wear pants instead of skirt, or using liquid hand soap instead of soap bar, or eating pizza instead of hamburger.
Same sex marriage is now under heated debate and scrutiny. While we know that marriage can be considered as a way of legally acknowledging a relationship, there is a lot more to the by-laws of marriage than just the legal acceptance of any relationships. The evolution of the human race has been so complex, that it is not fair to compare distinct social behavior 10 or 20 years ago. And yet, the basic rules of sex and marriage remain the same. Sex is a biological act done by living things in order to expand their specie. Sex is designed to be performed by the same specie of opposite sex. Meaning, a male dog is designed to have sex with a female dog. A male human is designed to have sex with a female human. For humans, there are complex consequences of having sex and having children, that the society has defined a way to manage these consequences in order to protect the general welfare of the people who are directly or indirectly involved with the acts and fruits of sex. In layman’s term we call this way of managing the consequences of sex as marriage.
The detailed rules governing marriage is different from one country to another. Even different from one state to another in the case of the U.S.A. However, all, if not most of the terms and conditions of marriages are based on the fact that the 2 parties involved in marriage plan to live together, share all resources, conceive and raise their own children, ensure that the children they raise will become good citizens of their community and ensure the general welfare of all people that will get involved in the marriage (marrying parties and their children).
Take note that part of the objectives of defining the by-laws of marriage is to protect the children, which are expected to be conceived by the female party as a result of a sexual union with the male party. There are exceptional cases wherein the female cannot conceive, and thus cannot complete her obligation. Thus, society deviced a way in which this problem can be addressed (we call it legal adoption).
Humans are definitely a very creative specie. While the animals will be content in doing what they are biologically designed to do, humans will not be contented with doing things by design. How ironic that while in most cases, people follow the rules, when it comes to sexual preferences, people will find ways to break the rule and then eventually make a new rule that will make the old one obsolete. It will not surprise me that one day, same sex marriage will become a globally accepted norm. It’s just one of the ways in which most extra-ordinarily creative humans would assert themselves to the point that they will eventually breakdown the general foundations of society which has always been based on the rules of nature.
